Record labels, fractionalization, etc

Hi nerds -

I salute you from El Born in Barcelona, an area filled with skinny streets, old buildings, hipster bars, and street art.

This week I’ve been reflecting about the importance of maintaining friendships, even when they live across the ocean.

Friends who empower each other to grow together are the secret sauce to a healthy, happy life. No packed agenda tops the priority of building that.

⚡️ The Optimizer Spectrum: The Optimizer Spectrum spans across industries and personalities.

  • The over-optimizer is great at building scalable and efficient systems. However, in the search for the most effective solution, they tend to over-engineer ideas and fix problems we don’t even have yet.
  • The under-optimizer produces output much faster, but does scrappier work. Solutions may work at launch, but it will likely require a redo as the product grows.

Where we fall in the spectrum determines the speed at which we work and reflects what we’re willing to sacrifice to get there.

🧩 Fractionalized win: Fractionalization widens accessibility to otherwise unattainable rewards.

Traditionally, people have fractionalized projects through stocks. Building a public company however, requires big capital and bureaucracy not everyone can afford.

The alternative? Tokenization.

For ex - an apartment costing millions is usually paid out by a single person.

When fractionalized, you can create tokens that represent a share of ownership of the property. Token-holders would then receive their portion of the cake whenever it gets sold or rented.

  • The more tokens you have, the more ownership you have.
  • The token’s value is pegged to the property value.
  • Token-holders receive returns when property is sold or rented.
  • Decisions about what to do with the property can be made by the token-holder community.

Now apply this to art pieces, cars, projects, or collectibles. Welcome to Web3.

🎺 The next music frontier: A shinning example of fractionalization is the music industry.

  • Music industry today: Up and coming artists are unable to live fully from their music. To sustain their work, artists pair up with record labels who fund their initial albums and tours, but take a large portion of their success and authenticity in return.
  • Next music frontier: NFTs provide an alternative model. Artists can now sell, say 20%, of their song through 20 NFTs to their fans. This grants the artists with initial funding and rewards the NFT holders every time the song is played by sharing with them a percentage of the song royalties.

This can be applied to songs, entire albums, concerts, merchandise, etc. The artist wins, the fans win, the entire creator economy wins.

“Etc actually means ‘end of thinking capacity’”

~ Random Pinterest image.. Seems accurate though.

“According to research, companies with diverse teams:

  • Have 19% higher revenue (Boston Consulting Group)
  • Outperform industry norms by 35% (McKinsey’s research)
  • Are 1.7 times more likely to be innovation leaders in their market (Josh Bersin)
  • Are 70% more likely to capture a new market (Harvard Business Review).”

Ever since I lived in Switzerland I became slightly addicted to french music (as you may remember from the musique en francais playlist).

This juicy gem reminds me of summer Saturday afternoons by the Rhône river.
